Sandy, they have tops on them, resembling a table, if you understand what I mean, the 'legs' of which stand on top of the chimney, and the 'table top' is the same size as the chimney, covering it, just allowing air to get through under the 'table top'. However, the chimneys are very high indeed, and when they needed repair, the guy used scaffolding on three levels. Don't think we'll be attempting that height!

It is difficult for the birds to get through, but they manage somehow!

No, I guess a few soppy birds is better than serious injury trying to save them.My OH fell off a very low roof once and broke his ankle badly.Not good for a serious runner at the time, I'm not sure who suffered worse, his ankle or my ears and as I am a Physiotherapist he refused my advise and accused me of being a sadist! He claims I was the only person he knew paid to beat people up.He's learnt his lesson since.
