How about a word game for anyone who would like a challenge .........
Oxymorons - what a wonderful word!
I'll start with a few:
good grief
sweet sorrow
pretty ugly
Government intelligence
Microsoft Works
At Nottingham University, a tutor decided that it would be fun to get to know each other by going round the assembled bunch of students, and asking them to give their name plus an adjective describing themselves. It had to begin with the same letter.
My name is Val, and the very kind guy sitting next to me said "say voluptuous" - how sweet of him.
Er .....no.
We still e-mail each other, though - a lovely guy.
His name is Don, and he called himself Dangerous Don in that exercise - he is so far from dangerous, it was a really clever thing to say!
My favourite of that name type was from Readers Digest many years ago (so it has to be true )
Scene from US Army boot-camp:
Tough drill sergeant major:
"You are all a bunch of weaklings My job is to break you down and remake you as real soldiers.
My name is Sgt Stone. What's your name (expletive deleted)?"
After a pause,
"Stonebreaker, Sir"
Never knowingly underfed
An oxymoron that used to send my mother mad whenever she heard it was "and there she was gone", whenever someone disappeared suddenly.
