The UK election and new government
This is not a political blog or forum. But I must say how much we both have enjoyed the election and the resulting commentary. I would guess that you have also.
For non UK readers, the UK Labour party is akin to the US Democratic party (the little guy), and our Conservatives broadly equate to the US Republican party (big business).
Being Irish (southern, and for historical reasons a Lib Dem supporter) now living and paying taxes in the UK, I would find it difficult to vote Conservative (Tories) unless Ken Clarke were to be Tory leader. But I really like the way that David Cameron invited the Lib Dems into government. He seemed to be very proactive and determined to achieve a stable administration.
I like his rhetoric at Day 1, and his apparent good relationship with Nick Clegg. Those guys get on well together but how long can it last?
What do you think?

Six months max. The Tories are always ready to knife eachother in the back and eat their own children, so Cameron will already be being plotted against, the Left and Right of the party will HATE it.
The Liberals will also loose support from the Left of their party. And possibly the centre too.
Labour are the lucky ones, they get time to sort out a new leader, re-group, let the other two do all the deeply unpoular and unpleasant things they need to to sort out the defecit, stand on the sidelines looking sensible while the other two parties descend into playground squabbling and scrapping...oh yes, it will be interesting to watch.
I've come across many of the Tories at parties ( despite being a very cynical leftie...) including Mr Cameron. He is even more like a boiled egg in a wig in reality than he looks in photos. He has very smooth shiny skin and I suspect he is an alien clone, he probably thought the same of me. Though my hair is more convincing.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that David Cameron and Nick Clegg look almost identical???? If they ever change the colours of their ties, I won't be able to tell them apart!
Very confusing!
Welcome on board, galgogirl, and well said!
Yes, they have the usual honeymoon period but that joke session in the video in the garden of #10 was a tad convincing IMO.
Let' wait until Christmas before discussing verdicts

I also think that the election coverage on radio 5 Live was superb. It was a refreshing change to hear politicians holding normal conversations with Peter Allen, rather than the usual shouting matches that they tend to indulge in. I guess that was because PA has been around for quite a while, considers many of them as friends, and has the ability to question gently as opposed to the John Humphreys style of battering.
I am totally hooked on it!

I was away for the election, and got back on the 11th. I was very glad to miss all the speculation, and speculation about speculation. Danny, of course a new government deserves a honeymoon--but who has a 6 month honeymoon these days? Only the very rich who don't work for a living or know the pressures of real life?
The first bit of political education I can remember was when I asked my mother the difference between the Democrats and the Republicans. She explained that if someone earned 10 dollars a year the Republicans would tax them 50 cents and the Democrats a dollar. If someone earned one dollar a year the Republicans would tax them 5 cents and the Democrats wouldn't tax them at all. It convinced me!

I was thinking that only the other day
