Well done Sarah, welcome to a very friendly and mad place. Look forward to hearing more about your adventures as time goes on.
Here is a fantastic knowledge base, I have only been a member for a few months but am and have learnt a lot from these kind people.
I have reached an age where my train of thought often leaves the station without me...
Welcome Sarah....my memories of Northern Spain are that it was very wet and we were on a motorbike so we headed the other side of the Picos and then down to Oporto....beautiful countryside....shame about the rain.
How far are you from Santiago de la Compostela (if that's how you spell it). I have visions of me doing it one day but it's only in my dreams I think.
You say that you are the only Brit in the village....keep it that way.....I was asked the other day if there were any of my friends that wanted to buy since he had a house for sale....I said I would ask and did I....did I hell as like....I like being the only 'English' in the village...suits me fine.
As for self sufficiency...my neighbours do the gardening and I reap the rewards....I just treat them to the things that they cannot afford or do their photographic work for them....and give them cuttings from the shrubs that I bring over from England....fair swops.....
As I said....welcome....mad bunch here ....but worth the effort....

Hi we're 50 mins from Santiago and now there is a new motorway 3 hrs from Porto (much to my husbands glee!) Hope to get sun back next week- we've already had the first bbq of the year.I know there are other Brits..15k one way and an hour the other ! We have friends that moved here but are 2 hrs away at Finisterre so its a weekend job. Being the first and only Brits means you get invited to everything and we have a food exchange program with our neighbours..Brit puds get homemade chorizo ,cheese and eggs !
