Hello Everyone,
My name is Dan and I am Michelle from Oregon's husband. I thought it might be a good idea, with some prodding from my lovely wife, to join CSH. After all, as many of you have heard, Michelle and I will be visiting the UK in September. We are both SO excited! I wanted to thank everyone for the support. In fact, I may get the chance to thank many of you in person And, just to let you all know, you are all very kind and sweet people to put up with us when we arrive in the Old World. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Oh, I suppose I better say a bit about myself too. So, let's see ... I'm a native Oregonian. You probably knew that already. Something new ... For 12 years, my employer Symantec (a software company that is best known for its consumer products such as Norton Internet Security or Norton 360) has been kind enough to keep me working. I've held a variety of jobs from taking customer calls to my current position as Business Process Analyst. Ah, that's kind of boring. Let's see ... I'm a huge railfan. Michelle probably told you all that by now. How about the fact, I took my interest in railroads one step further and I'm a published photographer and news and feature writer. While we are in the UK, we'll be traveling by rail. Hopefully local law enforcement will not arrest me for taking pictures of the UK railways. A definite issue here in the States.
Hopefully, that is a sufficient introduction. I did not see guidance on how many words or sentences were required such as the case with the instructors in my journalism classes like to enforce 🙂
If anyone has any questions, just let me know. I'll do my best to stay in touch. Life is a bit hectic with work, classes, and the Mrs. on the road but I'll manage some time somehow.
Take care all and thank you!

Welcome Dan, jobsworths may be a photography problem on the railways here as well , may be an idea to get a letter of accreditcation from one of your publishers and show it to any likely suspects first. Danny wouldn't dare put a limit on words here with a mostly female membership !(
yes TA
I'm probably overdue ). See you in september .

Great to have you on board, Dan. Thanks for taking the time to write your potted bio.
I used to be a railfan too but not as enthusiastically as you. There is something massively romantic about it that I am unable to put into words (the ladies may giggle at that!).
Really looking forward to meeting you both in Sep.
Never knowingly underfed
Hi Dan and WELCOME
We need more blokes on the forum .we are knee deep in knitting patterns and reipes .
if we all pull together we could have clouds of steam,a pile of spanners (sorry WRENCHES)and half an engine in some of the threads by the time you land here .
just a thaught .if you could get a press card from a publication you write for you could be the star visiter at the preserved railways over here ,just let them know you are comming beforehand and guage the response
hope to hear more from you soon MOS
sit down with a cupa and the urge will subside
lol...unless youre wearing a towel on your head and carrying a backpack you can pretty much take pictures of what you like here....Airports can be a bit strange, their are lots of men with guns hanging about them, remember not to fuss the nice doggies at the airport , and dont have dog treats in your pocket , as if they come to you it could involve an appointment with a man with a rubber glove ..but the railways are surrounded with men carrying backpacks and cameras and hanging round on railway bridges so youll fit in a treat ...lol
Hello and welcome Dan! So good to have you join us and we are all excited to see you. As far as photography on the railways goes, I have never seen anyone arrested for it and I see lots of people clicking away, especially when there is a steam engine around.
Seth, I shall let you off - especially if you are coming down in September.
I'll try that again!
Welcome Dan from the great Railway city of York. If my Dad were still alive I'm sure you could exchange rail banter, but I wouldn't know one end of a train from t'other.
All I care about is that they arrive and depart on time..looking forward to you coming here but hoping you're not wanting a tour guide of the railway museum, well ok, I could probably just about bear it, but not the model railway museum....Nooooo.
Hello again everyone,
I thought it would be easier to reply to everyone, up this point, in one big reply. If this is not the best way to handle this, please let me know:
For Seth - Thank you for the heads up on jobsworths and the potential photography problem on the UK railways. I will see if I can get some type of accreditcation from one of your publishers and show it to any likely suspects first. Certainly see you in September! Cheers!
For Sooliz - Thank you for the welcome! If Michelle was online she would verify that I do like to chat especially about railroads and how my day went. There are other topics perhaps will discover as time allows.
For Danny - Thank you, kind sir! No problem writing the bio. I could go on and on but I will spare everyone the gory details. There is definitely something highly cool and yes, massively romantic, about trains. I think it is ok, Michelle understands. Well, at least I hope she does. Michelle and I are really looking forward to meeting you and Fiona.
For MOS - Ah, thanks for the welcome from this bloke! LOL! Just doing my job and supporting Danny, Seth, and the rest of the blokes on CSH. Thank you for the information on the press card and contacting the preservation railways before our arrival. We'll be looking for the cloud of steam when we land Definitely sounds like I may need a press card, I will have to see if my magazine will provide one to me. Again, thank you!
For Kaye - Just not the fashion statement I want to make ... no worries, no towel on my head Airports are not my favorite place especially the ones with men and guns. I would probably get along with the doggies but I will take your advice and keep my doggie treats at home and rubber gloved dudes. It will be fun trip, I can tell already! Thank you!
For Toffeeapple - Thank you for the warm welcome! Ah, shuckles you are all so nice. Go to know there does not sound like huge issues but I will go ahead and see about a press card. Michelle and I are definitely going to be in the UK in September. Sounds like we are going to see you and Seth! Should it lots of fun
For brightspark - Thank you for the welcome to CSH! Michelle and I are looking forward to meeting you too!
For Terrier - No worries about the rail banter. I would love to go to the railway museum. We can certainly skip the model railway stuff. Is that a deal?
Thank you all and talk with you soon,
DanTastic

Welcome indeed to the forum Dan , but what is this about your reluctance to visit Latvia?
Unfortunately I shall not see you in September as no doubt I shall be up to my ears in counting pig holes and mapping the said holes - at least that is the plan so far.

I can map some of them for you...two ear holes, two nostrils, one mouth and I'll let you find the rest and that's not bad for starters...good luck with your quest...
And welcome Dan from one of the 'lads' in Bulgaria and believe me, they do alright and hold their own as the saying goes.....

Welkomen!
I'm very sad that i probably won't catch you on your trip to the UK.
My step dad is a steam rail buff though, so if you're in the Somerset area at all do let me know, I'm sure he'd be delighted to take you on the west somerset steam railway, he's got life membership of the preservation society there. Though, if it's going to be mid to late september he might be away at sea.
I can ask him for some contact details if you like, see if he can set you up with nice trip or something?
Intolerance will not be tolerated.
Hi Dan!
I can feel slightly smug at this stage since I have already met you and am looking forward to seeing you and Michelle again in September.
You should definitely go to the train museum in York! Michelle could go along, or she could find lots of other things to do in York, which is a fascinating place.
We will do the South Devon Railway here, and P will leave many hours of railway viewing on his computer...

P is a member of the West Somerset steam railway (as well as the south Devon)--if I tell him your step dad has life membership he will be jealous!
