As you know, we took Betty to her first training class last week. Well, we've decided we're not going there again, as we both felt it was totally unsuitable for her - too many dogs and such a short period of time (30 mins) that we reckon it's impossible for the trainers to do anything meaningful for so many dogs in so little time. The large number of dogs and people there meant that Betty was in a highly excited state the whole time and was so distracted by them all that she just wasn't capable of taking notice of any instructions.
We discussed it later and feel that she (and we) would benefit from one to one training. I don't know if the instructors from last week's class do that, but to be honest we weren't really impressed with them anyway. Having googled, I found a local lady trainer who has excellent reviews on FB and seems lovely, she does 1-2-1 and also classes, stressing that her classes are small with a maximum of 6 dogs. We've now exchanged several emails and have made arrangements to start seeing her on a 1-2-1 basis this week, in a village hall and field near her house. I have high hopes for this!

Sounds good Sue. Outside is best and a small group is very much needed for puppies! Hope this goes better.
Trying to enjoy life as it is
Well, we met Carrie-Anne at the designated field this morning as arranged. She is delightful, so friendly, hugely enthusiastic about her job and so knowledgeable, we got on brilliantly. She showed us exactly what to do, demonstrating each technique herself with Betty first, then husband and I each had a go. Betty picked up the instructions quickly - helped by the fact that there were very few distractions, which was exactly what we knew she needed. We've taken Betty out for her usual walk this afternoon (well, not to the marshes as usual, we went to the canal instead and walked along the towpath) and she's already so much better at walking to heel and much more manageable. We are so pleased.
We're seeing Carrie-Anne again next Wednesday for another session, at which time she's going to give us a printed report and work plan. She also said if we had any queries at all, or think of any other things we'd like her to work on, to just get in touch with her. I'm so glad I found her, she's marvellous.
