I guess you have to make sure he goes on the banned list then or whatever bad list they have.

yep: its on my to do list, when i have calmed myself down.  I hate confrontation and like to see the good in all; it has been a stressful day!

Welcome to the forum, boboff. Have you really signed up - as a host or as a worker?

Never knowingly underfed

hi Boboff; I am sure you will be ok; as Danny says are you a helper or a host??

I think I just got a bum deal on the first guy; but it did prompt me to be much more selective as to whom I would accept and much clearer as to what might be expected of you stayed with us

Our next visitor is not currently until August; an artistic couple from OZ, who live on the sales of their artwork.  They seem really lovely and we are getting to know each other better by email before the visit.  It seems very promising and I will let everyone know at the time how it goes!

Does anyone know if they allow families to use this?

We have two boys and this seems like a fantastic opportunity for us all to work on another smallholding etc in the UK and help the kids to get more experience. I have two boys, 13 and 10 and anything that drags them away from the PC is a good idea Smile

they do allow families to do this, however the number of people able to take families may be limited; you can see people offering in your area on the site and each listing states the number of people they can take; this will give you an idea

We signed up to HelpX last year and have had mixed volunteers - the first couple and our second helper were brilliant then we had a real problem guy - sounds like your guy Shelley; totally lazy except when it came to eating or surfing the net.  In the end we asked him to leave and it all got a bit unpleasant.

We did learn a lot from it though.  In the future we will have a contract for volunteers to read and sign and have the first week as trial week.  We didn't have anyone over the winter but hope to have helpers again soon.  Unfortunatley the last person who was supposed to come couldn't fly because of the ash so had to cancel.

Potentially it's a great idea but not it's without those helpers who can abuse the system.

I agree!
Unfortunately the only visitors we had booked have had to cancel as they need to sort out the sale of their art in Nice. Soon after we signed up Andy had to seek work outside of France and after the first disastrous experience, I didn't feel safe enough or capable of coping alone with difficult customers!! If and when Andy returns we will consider rejoining.
Do let me know how you get on with the new contract idea; I had one, but the helper just ignored it!!
Nice to meet you as well, another franglais on the forum!

Hello Everyone… I have just joined as I needed some advice on how to deal with lazy helpers from Helpx….They seem to take 3 days to do a 2 hour job…. and spend a lot of time standing around talking instead of working…. HELPsteam
