So far, I have removed one add-on that was of dubious benefit but which was significantly slowing down the page load timings. I also tried another improvement but maybe I did not do it correctly because it backfired and greatly slowed things down, so I dumped that.

To test the speed with Firebug (an add-on for FireFox) I based it only on the page load times for the main forum page. Before each test I cleared my laptop's browsing history and cache. Did that four times and took the average as the result.

Before improvements: 4.6 seconds

After: 3.09

In round figures that equates to a 25% improvement so far. The timings are only indicative because there are so many other factors at play on the connection between our server and my laptop or your computer.

The YSlow analysis shows that there is loads more that can be done.

Perhaps you all can help in a very easy manner. If you have formed an impression that forum xxx appears to be very fast, then post a link here so that I can examine their speed results for comparison.

Thanks for the positive feedback, Nadine and bluenose. ok

That encourages me to try and improve it further.

But negative feedback is also valuable to help pinpoint problem areas.

I'm so negative I can't even give you negative feed-back.  Other than the oddness when 'quoting'.  big_laugh

I'll try that again!

I will shut the site for 15 minutes from 08:00 BST this morning - that's 12 minutes from now!

That's to install the latest version (bug fixes) of the forum software.

The last thing I would want to do is cut off the flow of your creative genius, Seth!

I think it is working OK now. as always, let me know if anything seems wonky.

Back and undeaded it's all different ! Do I need a sat/nav.? Perhaps I should return to Occams typewriter to brush up my edification. No use asking me about speed with our download speeds anything is an achievement. big_laugh

Oh crumbs! - it was fine when I tested it after the upgrade. Now it has lost the "skin".

Bleedin' upgrades. I do hate them.
