Just a note on the hosting yourself thing - DH runs an online roleplaying games server (Neverwinter Nights) in our spare bedroom, we've got a reasonably normal broadband connection (I think we have a better guaranteed upload speed than the big providers give - we're on a little ISP called Nildram) and we used to have 40 people playing on the server at one time with no real issues.  We also host a remotely accessible database for a company some friends of ours run.  So I guess you would find it do-able, Danny, as games are notorious bandwidth gobblers, your blog/forum surely wouldn't need as much?  *looks around for geek comments*

Finding the site is sometimes fast and other times slow, either times there are only about 3 to 8 people on, so it can't be the number of people accessing that is causing the problems?

To digress Hi Mutley, I have an Olympus E300 SLR and I'm mad about photography, will put a link on my site or something in next few days.

Well, my webhost has multiple redundant T1 connections in a secure data centre, not ADSL. ADSL(Asymmetric digital subscriber line)  is intended for *subscribers*, i.e. end users, not for hosting busy websites; no serious commercial webhost uses ADSL. So I stand by my statement that it's not a solution to be generally recommended (though it's great if it works for your needs, and you have the time/skills to maintain it and enjoy doing so!).

I am very happy that for a small monthly fee (working out around $2 per site hosted) my webhost keeps my sites running at least 99.9% of the time and looks after all security issues, software and hardware upgrades etc. so I can concentrate on the websites, not keeping the server running.

wow! I hadn't seen the link before. The weather station is most impressive. It loaded a bit slowly but was worth it when it arrived 🙂

Hey! Great to know that we may have some expert technical advice, Veronica, Tascar and Elrohana.

I do appreciate a vibrant debate, guys, but let’s not argue, please. Nice site, Tascar.

The scenario with this Cottage Smallholder site is:

1 – based on Wordpress, which is far from being an efficient platform, but it is easy to administer

2 – a blog and forum (especially the forum) requires a fairly punchy server capability

3 – bandwidth (traffic) runs at about 5 GB per day at peak

4 – our VPS spec is this Linux VPS:40 with CentOS, Apache and PHP Version: 5.2.9, MySQL Version: 5.0.22

5 – I am not a Linux admin

6 – there are 10 sites hosted on the VPS but the others are mainly static sites and really not busy

7 – at peak we get aprox 12,000 pageviews/day but Jan/Feb is a quiet time, maybe 7,000 pageviews/day (approx 230,000 hits/day)

8 – we pay for HTTP site monitoring at 2  to 5 minute intervals from 5 locations – site is unavailable maybe 3 or 4 times daily for maybe 2 to 5 minutes each time

9 – we have slow DB queries log monitoring but we have hammered most all of the killer issues (mainly stats add-ons)

10 – caching is enabled on the sidebar widgets but not on main page content

11 – max visitors per 5 minutes is rarely more than 80 at the moment (a pretty light load really)

12 – we do not know what the network connection bandwidth is (from the host)

The site should not be slow, we think, but it appears to be really crawling at times

I'll try and drag the OH away from gaming at some point today and ask him what he thinks.

Hi Danny, Veronica, Elrohana and all. First thing is that I totally agree with Veronica, running a load of sites need either T1 or T2 connectivity, where I was coming from was having a small site at zero cost, just playing to see what I can and can't do (something to do in the winter).

Danny drop me an e-mail tassellb@live.fr if you want to chat about hosting, agree with what you are doing just don't think you are getting a good service as the site shouldn't be as slow as it is.

I expect my site to be slow I'm playing with the internet, yours should be fast as you are paying. enough said.

I apologise if I have upset anyone.

Hi Tascar

Well, you didn't upset me (and I hope I didn't upset you – if I did I apologise!). I agree with you anyway, a busy commercial site and a small "play" site are two different situations  with different requirements. It doesn't seem as if this site should be having such frequent outages, especially with so much memory available. Could be down to poorly optimised database queries I suppose, but it sounds as if you've dealt with that.

I think you are probably right, Veronica, and the cause may be inefficient DB queries. The slow query log is set to a very high threshold, like 10 seconds, from memory. This was appropriate a few months ago when I commissioned extra custom plugins. The DB queries were incredibly badly designed. Worked fine on the test site but crashed when faced with real life volumes. Also, we had to drop some stats plugins for the same reason.

The web host is really very good and responsive, so I suspect the cause lies not in the VSP/shared resources, but with our code. I think the first step will be to reduce the threshold of the slow DB queries log.

One thing I do notice frequently is that "Connecting to csh.com" displays in the bottom status tray for quite a long time. Could that indicate potential DNS delays either at our ISP or the web host?

Our ISP is Freedom2surf, now a part of Pipex. The service seems to be stable now (terrible initially, 3-4 years ago) but I am always looking for extra bang for my buck. I took a look at Nildram, Elrohana, and it looks promising. Changing ISPs is like changing banks - you need a really good reason. But personal recommendations count for a lot. If I do intend to switch, I will let you know first so that you can take advantage of their cash offer for referrals.

Thanks all for your comments.

Hmph!  I've just been thrown out and denied access for 18 minutes.  I had nothing else running at the time then I got Task Manager saying that I had 73 applications running that were not responding!  Grumpy? Me?!Angry

I'll try that again!
