Don't worry, Grumps. 73 applications running is the sign of a really busy person.

Isn't it time you went to bed after your busy week?RunAway

You've just called me my OH's occasional nickname for me!  Usually if he's not fed me for some time. Monster

I was going to say that I'd be leaving you for the evening to listen to Mark Tully but he's not on.  I love the sound of that man's voice.  His writing isn't up to much though.Frown

I'll try that again!

Um, yes I probably do.  I have a tiny appetite but when I get hungry I need to eat NOW not much of anything, half a bag of crisps in an emergency will get me through several hours.  He says I am a nightmare in restaurants because I can only eat a starter.  I never have a problem - just smile sweetly, tell the waiter I can't eat much and I get what I want.

I'll try that again!

I think you are probably right, Veronica, and the cause may be inefficient DB queries. The slow query log is set to a very high threshold, like 10 seconds, from memory. This was appropriate a few months ago when I commissioned extra custom plugins. The DB queries were incredibly badly designed. Worked fine on the test site but crashed when faced with real life volumes. Also, we had to drop some stats plugins for the same reason.

oh wow, 10 seconds is a *long* time! No wonder you are getting slowdowns. Unfortunately a lot of web developers know nothing about analysing and optimising queries (and may in fact only know the most basic SQL). I've looked at some CMSs that have loads of unnecessary queries because the developers apparently didn't know about joining tables. This is bearable on low-traffic sites but as soon as you get a lot of traffic the whole thing falls apart. I learned SQL a long time ago, and I remember optimising queries and finding simple changes that reduced execution time by factors of up to 100!

I was an SQL whizz kid 25 years ago, Veronica. Its all gone very rusty indeed now Confused

Still, I am happy to have aired the issues here because it sort of kick started my thinking again. I have requested 5 second threshold on the slow query log. Let's see what that reveals. Thanks.

TA - you are a bit like Fiona in that she is quite happy to have a Tandoori Chicken starter as her main course when eating  out in our favourite local Indian. I love low maintenance ladies ! Smooch
